Crisis Funds Available to Help Low-income Families in Cherokee County
Mid-Sioux Opportunity Cherokee County Crisis Fund received $5,000 from the Cherokee County Legacy Foundation to help low-income families meet challenges and to become self-sufficient when other state and federal programs cannot help them. The Crisis Fund pays for rent, utilities, food, gas vouchers, vehicle repairs, medicine and other items that cause a family hardship. Crisis money is 100% donated by local individuals, businesses and organizations. All donations go to direct services to the 2,143 people in 895 households served throughout the county.
“The Crisis Fund is the last option many families have before they are evicted, disconnected from their energy source, or face other hardships. This grant money will help provide families with basic necessities.” said Dick Sievers, Mid-Sioux Executive Director. “The Mid-Sioux staff and the families we serve appreciate being awarded this grant.”
To qualify for the Crisis Fund, there has to be an emergency or a crisis need with the family meeting the federal poverty guidelines at or below 150%. At that poverty level, a family of four makes $33,075 a year. Before a payment is made, all other resources have to be exhausted and a payment can not exceed one month’s bill or $300 per household. Each household may not exceed $600 per year. Mid-Sioux pays vendors directly and no cash goes directly to the family.
Contact the Cherokee County Outreach office to apply or to find out more about the Cherokee County Crisis Fund. You may call 712-225-3322 or stop at 921 S. 2nd St. Monday through Friday.
